The Ministry of Aviation and Meghalaya’s Transport Department jointly demonstrated a seaplane flight service at Umiam Lake’s Water Sports Complex.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Union Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu attended the demonstration program beside Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Transport Department, Sniawbhalang, Commissioner Secretary Transport Department and officials of the Aviation Ministry and Air port authority of India.
Naidu highlighted the government’s vision to enhance Northeast connectivity, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s priority. “The Ministry aims to integrate the Northeast with mainland India through enhanced road, rail and air connectivity.”
The demonstration showcased a Canadian-made De Havilland amphibian aircraft. Similar launches occurred in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
Chief Minister Sangma praised the initiative, emphasizing connectivity’s crucial role in tourism and national growth. He noted seaplane requirements: 200 meters of water length and 5 meters depth.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar commended the collaborative effort.
Dhar also informed that initiatives have been taken for the expansion of Umroi Air Port and Baljek Air Port and seek the full support of the Ministry of Aviation and the cooperation of Aircraft operators.
Other who spoke were Secretary and joint Secretary Aviation also the Commissioner Secretary Transport Department with his wellcome address.
A short flight was also taken from the lake around the Shillong city to Umroi Air Port and back to the lake by dignitaries.
